Developmental Milestones (0–12 Months)
A Simple Month-by-Month Guide for Parents
Baby milestones are exciting, but they can also create anxiety. A helpful approach is to look at development in three categories: gross motor, fine motor, and communication. Here’s a simple guide for what many parents commonly see during the first year.
By 3 Months
Gross motor: lifts head during tummy time, improving head control
Fine motor: brings hands to mouth, begins reaching for toys
Communication: coos, smiles, turns toward voices
By 6 Months
Gross motor: rolls more, sits with support, bounces on legs when held
Fine motor: passes toys hand-to-hand, brings toys to mouth
Communication: babbles, reacts to sound, may respond to name
By 9 Months
Gross motor: sits independently, crawls or commando crawls, stands with support
Fine motor: points/pokes, drops toys on purpose, explores objects
Communication: uses gestures, responds to familiar words/people
By 12 Months
Gross motor: pulls to stand, cruises, may begin walking
Fine motor: pincer grasp (thumb + finger), stacks, scribbles
Communication: understands simple instructions, may say a few words
When parents should ask questions
Every baby develops on their own timeline. But if you notice significant stiffness, a strong side preference, feeding challenges, constipation, or sleep struggles, it may be worth getting support early.
At Life Alive Chiropractic, pediatric care focuses on gentle nervous system support and healthy movement development, not chasing symptoms.
